Was ehemals der Hafengelände der mächtigen Stadt Rom gewesen ist, ist heute die Stadt Fiumicino und der internationale Flughafen Leonardo da Vinci.. Aber das künstliche Hafenbecken Portus ist noch heute in der Landschaft sichtbar.

30 Kilometer von südwestlich von Rom gelegen, wurde Portus im ersten und zweiten Jahrhundert erbaut und blieb für ungefähr 500 Jahre Roms Tor zur Mittelmeerwelt. Die Küstenlinie war zu dieser Zeit etwa 1-2 Kilometer östlich der heutigen.
